FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lexington, Ky:

The Kentucky Green Party has named its candidate to run against US Representative Andy Barr in Kentucky's 6th Congressional District next year. Geoffrey M. Young of Lexington is entering an already-crowded field. Three political newcomers, Elisabeth Jensen, Michael Coblenz, and Joe Palumbo, have started campaigning for the Democratic primary next May.

Mr. Young is an energy efficiency expert who retired from 13 years at the Kentucky Division of Energy to work in politics full time. His 2012 attempt to unseat State Representative Stan Lee (R-Lexington) helped bring up important issues that would otherwise have been avoided.

Mr. Young promises an aggressive campaign. "Andy Barr voted to allow the NSA to keep spying on law-abiding Americans who use the phone or internet," he said. "While I will propose to cut $300 billion of waste in the military and intelligence budgets, Barr's budget plan leaves a gap of $5.7 Trillion over ten years that will have to be covered in some unspecified way."

Kris Smoot, a member of the party's Executive Committee, added, "In his short tenure in Washington, Congressman Barr has shown little regard for our civil liberties and for the basic needs of the women and children of Kentucky. He is unwilling to shrink the bloated federal defense budget, money which could be used to fund schools and invest in cleaner technologies."

Congratulations to Mr. Young and KYGP. What are the ballot access requirements(if any)?

We need 400 signatures in our district to get on the ballot (while R and D are only required to get 2). No one can legally file in our state until November, but we're already staring down the barrel of three Democrat, the frontrunner being a woman who used to be an exec at Disney and now works in education.

Update: Geoff Young is no longer running for KY-06 as a Green. He has switched to the Democratic party.

RE: Geoff Young for U.S. House in 2014.

Tried to Google this and found nothing but I assume your information correct. With a crowded slate of democrats trying for the nomination I am puzzled by this switch, but I guess Young thinks it his best chance.

While I would love to see Green Party members in national office I am still content to let the current strategies play out and build the party slowly and regionally. In the fullness of time we will surely see Greens in Washington.

Thought to go to the Ky website Politics1 and found verification:

That sucks. Hopefully they hadn't already collected signatures for him.
