Background

Former GPUS Secretary Cook resigned, prompting a new special election.

Candidate Information

Holly Hart
I am running for Secretary of the GPUS and hope I will receive your vote. I formerly served in this role and have assisted, as requested, with various tasks since then. I am familiar with most of the tasks and have a good grasp of the rest.

I am committed to helping the party function efficiently and will do my best to carry out the tasks involved. I believe it would be worthwhile to educate more people who have an interest in this type of position, so as to ensure smooth transitions for the various secretarial tasks.
I am also running, because I have enjoyed the type of work involved. As a person with a temporary-but-long-term-disability affecting mobility, this has been something I am able to do for the party.

I am familiar with the make-up of the GPUS and its various policy documents (helpful for responding to inquiries) and am able to help steer newcomers to helpful information and resources. During my earlier time as secretary, I was willing to stay up late on nights before the deadline of a controversial vote, because I knew there will *always* be at least one delegate unable to figure out their login or password. (And I helped them, even if I suspected they didn't agree with how I'd have voted.)

I am an advocate for open meetings and have encourage members to observe calls.

If elected, I would expect to step back from some or most of my current activities, partly to be able to focus on secretarial work, partly to avoid any potential conflict of interest.

To give delegates an idea of the type of work I’ve been involved with, here are some of my recent activities:

 - Member and current Co-chair of the Coordinated Campaign Committee
  Updating contacts from stat parties;
  Outlining criteria to help state parties assess how they can best become involved and effective in electoral work;
  Organizing and assisting with Green Wave Livestreams, Press Conferences and candidate and officeholders interviews;
  Updating committee information;
  Following up with referrals for potential candidates and respective state parties.

 - Recent, former Co-chair of Media Committee
  Prepared press releases;
  Responded to press inquiries;
  Organized and managed ANM/PNC press conferences, both live and virtual, including the 2020 Pres/V-P press conference.

 - Assisting with organizing and electoral work in my local chapter and state party.

Past work (obviously dated, but included here to give an idea of the work involved):

- Created a list and calendar of secretarial duties;

- Updated and edited a Welcome/Information Message that went to all new delegates and alternates, and an Info-sheet about the Voting Page;

- Completed a review of bylaws updates going back to around 2005, marked those that had not yet been inserted into the bylaws document on the web page, and have had the bylaws and operating rules documents updated;

- Initiated improved process for states and caucuses to report updates in their delegations, and helped bring the voting page directory up to date for delegates, alternates and observers.

 - Responded to inquiries about the Green Party: help with school projects, graduate research papers, requests from publishers for screen shots of our website or used of portions of our platform; requests for information from new delegates.

Local/State Experience

- Leafletting, tabling, petitioning, envelope-stuffing, event planning, media (press releases, appearances on Public Access TV, network television and radio), letter-writing, grabbing the mic. at public hearing sessions at city council meeting, etc……

- Sought and gained bi-partisan legislative support for an expanded ballot status option bill in 2001-2003

- 2006-07 - consultant in a related Green/Libertarian lawsuit successfully settled out of court.

- Coordinated ballot access petitioning in my state for Green presidential candidates since the early 2000’s.

 - Oversaw ballot filing paperwork nationally for Cobb/LaMarche in 2004; McKinney/Clement in 2008.

- IAGP candidate for Lt Gov in 2002. (Slate was endorsed by the statewide Latino weekly "El Communicador.”)

- Volunteer with several local campaigns, including campaign treasurer.

- Panelist on women in electoral politics program, presented by the University of Iowa Women's Resource and Action Center.

- Current or past member of boards of directors for Extend the Dream Foundation, Emergency Housing Project (Shelter House), Citizens for Public Power
