NOTA

Background

The GP-US bylaws provide for an online election in the case of a vacancy on the Steering Committee. Such a vacancy has occured.

Candidate Information

Steve Kramer
I joined the Green Party in 2001, shortly after the 2000 election, after ten years as an unaffiliated independent. It impressed me that the Greens were willing to state their values up front, unlike the two major parties...and it impressed me even more that I agreed with so many of them without reservation.

I soon became Coordinator of the Howard County Green Party and served in that capacity for just shy of two years. I was appointed as a alternate Delegate to the GPUS CC from Maryland in 2003, and was elected to the post in 2004. Also in that year, I began coordinating support for David Cobb's candidacy for President in Maryland, eventually becoming field coordinator for the campaign in Maryland and later in the Mid-Atlantic States. In that capacity, I did my part in attempting to win ballot access for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

I served as the campaign manager for Beth Hufnagel's 2002 race for Comptroller of Maryland, the first statewide race ever by a Maryland Green. Later, I managed Lise Mendel's campaign for Howard County Board of Education in 2004.

I attended the first organizational meeting of the Green Party of West Virginia in 2004, advising them on steps they may take towards accreditation in the GPUS. I continue to serve in that regard.

I have participated in seminars and candidate schools for the Party. My particular area of interest is voting and election reform; as such, I have conducted seminars for the Maryland Greens on the subject, devised the method of apportionment for Maryland's Delegates to the 2004 Convention, and currently serve as a co-facilitator for the GPUS Presidential Nominating Process Working Group.

In terms of outreach, I have participated in lectures and seminars on the USA PATRIOT Act, standing in solidarity with members of the Muslim community in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. in doing so. I also coordinated a seminar on urban sprawl in Maryland with the Howard County Sierra Club; it was at that meeting where I, in an act of principle, turned over my family's 'tax relief' check from the Bush Administration to the Howard County Green Party - an act noted in the _Progressive Review_ the next day.

I am a member of the Maryland Chapter of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee, the Howard County Coalition for Peace and Justice, and Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (incipient membership). I am also the founding member of the Fellowship of Christian Greens, an independent group of Greens focused on advocacy of Green issues in the Christian community, and creating a spiritual 'home' for Christians within the GP.

Closer to home, I'm 39 years old, and am married with two daughters. I'm a computer network engineer by trade; however, I'm currently out of work (I've been interviewing for a job and helping run the PNP WG, which is why I'm a bit late in getting this to you!) I attended the University of Maryland, and live here in Columbia, Maryland, where I grew up.

Finally, I'm very gratified to be considered for this position, and I hope to earn your trust and support. Thank you!

Roger Snyder
Roger Snyder's Bio (Thanks to the friends who helped assemble it.)

He is a member of Long Island SHAD (Sound & Hudson against Atomic Development). SHAD, a twenty seven year old organization focusing on anti-nuclear work; Roger helped lead the people's movement (which made Suffolk Green and Green conscious) that closed the Shoreham nuclear power plant. SHAD has worked on many nuclear issues including waste disposal and nuclear weapons.

Roger helped mobilize people to work against the toxic threats from Brookhaven National Lab on LI. He was in the leadership of Community Alliance for Lab Accountability. The people's movement succeeded in closing both reactors at BNL.

Roger's organizing centers around non-violent action, i.e. mobilizing people to take part in direct and symbolic civil disobedience and legal actions. His organizing is to both accomplish a specific public benefit, and to help people become self-empowered for log term societal and personal benefit, in other words, Green.

He is a long term member of the War Resister League, and one of the founding members of the LI WRL local. The local was active mainly in work to prevent military intervention, reduce the military budget, and removing the causes of war such as issue of social injustice and a culture of violence. The local used nonviolent action and has demonstrated often against taxes that pay for war and against war toys for children. The local was one of the active groups on LI preceding and during the Persian Gulf Wars I & II.

Roger's also worked with and support of other social change groups, (feminist, civil rights, Central American, environmental, environmental justice, equal justice, labor, animal rights, etc.).

His first organizing experience came in high school against the Vietnam War as part of national moratorium actions.

He's attended many demonstrations, and taken part in many civil disobediences leading to his arrest mostly on LI, in Washington DC and in New Hampshire (at the Seabrook nuclear plant).

He's spoken at rallies and demonstrations, addressed numerous boards, and legislative and other political bodies, and submitted written testimony to these bodies. Roger's participated in news programs, interviews, and debates on radio and television on topics including non-violence, nuclear power, war, and gun control, run as a Green for public office many times and is the current Green Party Chair in Suffolk, a founding member of the Green Party of NY State Committee, a member of the Green Party of the U.S. Coordinating Committee, and on several GP-US committees.

He has worked on a number of campaigns for public office and referendum beginning in the early '80s, dealt with election law and various Boards of Elections in NYS and has served as Parliamentarian for the GP-NY State Committee.

He received non-violence training, and became a trainer himself. He also has worked as a peacekeeper at rallies and events ranging from the Clearwater Revival to public meetings between Jews and Palestinians.

He helped as an escort at women's heath centers, worked as a liaison for the Native American on LI, and taught meeting facilitation and the consensus process.

He was News Director and General Manager of the college community radio station at Southampton, and helped transform it from a campus limited AM station to community broadcast FM stereo.

He studied psychology for six years on college and post-graduate levels, and Engineering Technology/Electronics and Electronics both at college and vocationally.

He participated in the Learning Community program, a study of the person centered approach founded in cooperation with psychologist Carl Rogers on whose theories and applications it was based. This approach was applied to global conflict resolution as represented by Rogers' (not 'Roger's') role in President Carter's Middle East Peace process. He's been a long time union member with the Industrial Workers of the World, and has actively supported local labor organizations and actions.

He ran a cooperatively owned printing company (The Print Shop) which did work for the original New York Green Party and offered lost cost services to the non-profit/movement community. His organization was known on Long Islandand NYC as the place where radicals go to get their printing needs taken care of. The Print Shop was run on an egalitarian worker basis with workers receiving equal pay and sharing in the decision making. Printing was supplied to such other organizations as the War Resister League, Women Make Movies, U.S. Tibet Committee, Sierra Club, CISPES, National Organization for Women, NARAL, and labor unions, health advocacy groups, housing rights groups, etc. It was part of the Progressive Printers Network, a national association of print shops endeavoring to produce a more worker friendly workplace and support social change activism.

Roger is currently a stay-at-home dad, busy raising his five and eight year old children. His oldest child recently moved to Arizona. He does some computer consulting work for individuals on the side.

Roger was born in 1956 and raised in lower Hudson Valley of New York State. He has lived on Long Islandsssssssss Suffolk County since 1974. He currently resides in Huntington with his wife Jennifer, and his two youngest children.
