Background

Proposal #223, Creation of National Green Party House and Senatorial campaign committees, was adopted by the GPUS National Committee on 6/19/06. The Green Party House Campaign Committee announced a call for nominations in May, 2008, and hereby presents the candidates that have been nominated for a one-week review and discussion, followed by a one-week vote.

Each candidate will get to submit a 250-word statement making the case for electing her or him to the committee.

Preferred qualifications: Candidates should have previous experience in working on federal campaigns and on working on GPUS committe

Bill Paparian is a native Californian, and was educated in public schools. He received his B.A. degree from Cal State Northridge and following his Vietnam era military service in the Marine Corps attended Southwestern University School of Law on the G.I. Bill where he received his Juris Doctor Degree. He is married and the father of three sons.

Paparian has been an attorney in private practice in Pasadena since 1980. He is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Indigent Criminal Defense Appointments Program providing complete legal defense services through the trial level for indigent criminal defendants. In the first post 9/11 civil rights case involving FBI misconduct, Paparian successfully represented environmentalist and anti-war activist Josh Connole who had been wrongfully accused of acts of domestic terrorism.

During Paparian’s 12 years of service as an elected public official from 1987 to 1999 he was well known for his crusade to bring a “Living Wage” ordinance to Pasadena, his active involvement on behalf of affirmative action and against bigotry and hate crimes, and his strong commitment to seeing diversity as a strength and asset.

Paparian served as the Vice-Mayor of Pasadena from 1994-1995 and as Mayor of Pasadena from 1995-1997. Paparian’s service as the Mayor of Pasadena in support of the military and veterans was recognized by the Secretary of the Navy who awarded Paparian the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. The citation reads in part: “Mayor Paparian’s leadership, professionalism, and selfless dedication throughout reflected great credit upon himself, the city of Pasadena, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.”

During his tenure in public office he chaired the Public Safety Committee, the Business Enterprise Committee, and the Legal Committee. He also served in many local, regional, and state appointed positions including the California State Social Services Advisory Board, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, the Los Angeles County Sanitation District, and the Emergency Preparedness Commission for the City and County of Los Angeles.

Paparian is perhaps best known for his efforts to end the U.S. blockade of Cuba. While serving as Mayor of Pasadena he convened a conference on the future of U.S.-Cuba relations at Occidental College that was co-sponsored by the United Nations Association and the Department of Diplomacy and World Affairs. He was twice called to Washington D.C. where he testified at a hearing on U.S. Economic and Trade Policy toward Cuba before the House Committee on Ways and Means, and at the U.S. International Trade Commission Hearing on the Economic Impact of U.S. Sanctions with Respect to Cuba. Paparian has traveled frequently to Cuba to coordinate the delivery of critically needed medical supplies and equipment to the children of Cuba and has worked closely with the Cuban Council of Churches and Havana’s pediatric hospitals in responding to their medical needs.

I'd be happy to serve on the campaign committee. I am a longtime activist and social worker, and last year I made a quixotic run for Congress, landing 1,274 votes (5.45%) in a special election and going toe to toe with our now congresswoman in several debates. I got good press coverage and had a great time! If my experience and support can assist new candidates, I will be pleased.

I have been a registered Green since 2000. I was just starting to
get actively involved in the party when my son was born in 2004.
That took up all my time, but soon I was able to start getting
involved again, mainly through developing web sites for parties and
candidates. I am the webmaster for The Berks County Green Party and
assist the Wyoming County Green Party with their web site. I ran the
web sites for all the Greens running for office in 2007 from Berks
including Jennaro Pullano's run for Mayor. I was the webmaster for
the 2007 Annual National Meeting that was in Reading, PA.
I was disappointed to see how many Greens running for office in the
last election cycle did not have a web page - not even a free
blogspot page. So I made a web site that was free and simple to use
so all Green candidates would have a web presence. During that work,
I got involved with the GPUS election database update and made the
web page for that.
My unique contribution to the GPHCC will be my ability to create and
update the web site. Successful Green elections are very important
to me and I hope to contribute to victory through this committee.

Pat Driscoll
Pat Driscoll was born and raised in San Francisco and joined the California Green Party in May of 2000 while living in Sacramento. He is a Vietnam veteran and founded the Sacramento Chapter of Veterans For Peace. While in Sacramento, Pat served two terms as an elected member of the Sacramento Green Party County Council and ran as the Green Party candidate for Congressional District 5 in the 2004 general election and subsequently in the 2005 special election. In 2006 he served as Treasurer for Peter Camejo's campaign for governor, Treasurer for Todd Chretien's campaign for U.S. Senate, and Treasurer for Jeff Kravitz's campaign for Congressional District 5.

After moving to Eugene Oregon in January 2007, Pat was appointed to an open position on the State Coordinating Committee (SCC) of the Pacific Green Party (PGP) of Oregon, and in June 2007 was elected to a 1 year term on the PGP SCC. Pat is currently active in promoting our four Green Party congressional candidates in Oregon, has organized two major fundraising events in Eugene for Cynthia McKinney's Presidential campaign, and is the FEC Treasurer for the PGP.

Maria Allwine
I became involved in the Green Party in 2004 when I ran for US Senate (1% of
the vote). I ran for State Senate in my legislative district in 2006 (11%).
I was endorsed in that race by the Baltimore City Paper. My campaign
focused on the deregulation of the electric utility, BGE/Constellation, and
I participated in many forums where I went head to head with the incumbents
over their votes to deregulate and their refusal to mitigate the disaster of
rising utility rates for BGE's customers. One incumbent was so angry that I
challenged her so relentlessly on that issue, that after the election when I
went to her office on Green Lobby Night, she cursed me and almost threw me
out of her office. I knew I had run a great campaign and was definitely on
the right track!

In 2007 I ran for Baltimore City Council President and broke through the
mainstream media. I was featured in several publications and did many talk
radio programs in addition to many forums and panels. I was declared the
"winner" of the League of Women Voters debate (attended by all the
candidates) by some reporters in attendance. The Sun featured me in a
lengthy and complimentary article and while it did not endorse me, mentioned
me favorably in its endorsement of my opponent, unusual for a third-party
candidate in Baltimore. I got 17% of the vote.

I have engaged in nonviolent direct action against the invasion and
occupation of Iraq with the Pledge of Resistance-Baltimore since 2002 and
recently participated in the Witness Against Torture action at the Supreme
Court on 1/11/08 and the trial in May, which received mainstream media
coverage, including two Washington Post articles. I am scheduled for a jury
trial this summer for a March action in the US Senate Gallery. I am also a
member of the steering committee of the MD Coalition Against the BGE Rate
Hikes and a member of the MD Universal Healthcare Action Network, as well as
one of the co-founders of the Take Back Our WYPR movement, a local group
working to restore the local national public radio station to the community.
I lobby local, state and federal legislators for all the groups of which I
am a member and have testified in Annapolis on various bills. I also have
personal working relationships with two Democratic Party lawmakers in the MD
General Assembly.

I hope my campaign knowledge as well as my experience lobbying legislators
can be useful to other Greens in their own campaigns. I know that more
Greens must be elected if this country is ever going to become the kind of
country I want to live in. It's past time for people like us, who actually
believe that elected officials are supposed to represent the people who
trust us enough to vote for us, to legislate and govern. I will feel I've
done my part if I can help make it easier for other Greens to run the kind
of campaign that results in their election.

Keith Salkowski
I have been active in the Maryland Green Party (MGP) since January, 2004. I ran for Maryland’s 2nd Congressional seat in 2004, so I feel I have a first-hand understanding of the challenges and demands facing Congressional candidates. For the past two years, I’ve been the Baltimore County delegate to the MGP Coordinating Council (the ruling body of the MGP) as well as the Convener of the Electoral Committee of the CC. I recently led the effort to develop procedures for primary elections to select candidates for elective office; previously, candidates were nominated by a somewhat undemocratic process involving locals and the CC. I would be happy to bring my talents and experience to bear on behalf of GPUS. I‘m especially interested in lobbying on behalf of Green interests, policies and candidates.

In my “real” life, I have more than twenty years experience in the TV/movie production business. I currently work as a writer/producer for the Discovery Channel, so I’m in the Washington D.C. area 3 to 4 days each week.
