Background

Former Treasurer Brian Bittner resigned his position as of February 7, which left a vacancy on the Steering Committee of the GPUS National Committee. After receiving 2 nominations in February, the Steering Committee put the Treasurer vacancy election on hold pending hiring a part-time contract accountant. This position is in the interview stage at this time, and the SC is consequently reopening the vacancy election.

Treasurer terms run for two years -- the term for this seat began in 2016, and will run until the scheduled SC election in summer 2018.

No write-ins can be accepted, as nominees must accept their nominations by the end of the nomination period.

Cheryl Wolfe
Cheryl Wolfe, Montana Delegate
Resume link: http://gpus.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/2017-C-Wolfe-Resume.pdf

I am a Certified Public Accountant and have been licensed with a permit to practice in Montana since 1998. I was a non-traditional student when I went to college in Gunnison Colorado, and as a new CPA with young children when I came to Montana I chose to work in private industry rather than for a public firm. So over the past 18 years I've worked more than ten years as a corporate controller or accounting manager. Most of that was in the retail grocery business, and several years in manufacturing. I've had shorter contracts with a variety of other types of companies.

For the past ten years I've worked most of the time as a sole proprietor, on contract and special projects, and taxes when I can't avoid it. Tax is one of several areas of specialization for CPAs -- it is not my favorite since the tax laws are not logical or fair. My favorite thing is information systems, and I've worked a great deal of the time designing, setting up, and implementing accounting systems.

Auditing IS one of my preferred areas of work, and I've worked for several non-profit organizations. Most recently I contracted for three years with a community development corporation to advise their accounting staff and prepare the audit materials for their required annual audit of all their various federally funded grants and relending programs. I have experience with fund accounting, preparation of financial reports, budgeting and being the chair of a budget committee.

Recently I experienced a crisis of conscience after working with several companies in a row that I could not continue working for. Our regulatory systems are broken and the laws are not enforced. I seriously debated whether to even bother maintaining my license, since it is a continuing effort and large expense and (in my recent opinion) rather than an honorable profession, the CPA designation has become a commodity. I have lost faith and I don't know if or when it is coming back. I believe in our Code of Professional Conduct but it does not address the real world business environment we live in. I am sure you are aware of this situation. I am planning to start a dog-walking business. And make some pottery. Although I am not sure I can financially sustain myself that way - we'll see. Meanwhile my husband is working two jobs, full-time at a local hospital as a housekeeping supervisor, and part-time as a mail carrier for the Post Office. I have two grown sons and a daughter still at home.

I have been a Green since the early 2000's. When I discovered the key values that most closely align with my personal beliefs, there was a small Green party in this state, and we were just trying to keep it alive with only a handful of members. In 2010 and 2012 I ran as a candidate for our state legislature.

We desperately need Greens in office, and I am hoping to be able to help that happen. We have to change our world.

I would be happy to answer any questions you might have, and provide references.

I would also appreciate any wisdom or advice you care to share with me. Everything is connected.
