Background

After massive cuts and staff layoffs during 2018, and modest but successive rebuilding in 2019 and 2020, the proposed 2021 budget plans for continued growth and steady progress. The total budget proposed for 2021 is $300,000, roughly 8% lower than the 2020 budget proposal, primarily due to the absence of PNC costs. Given the plan for another virtual meeting in 2021, costs associated with travel and an in-person ANM have been reallocated to other lines. A staff member is also retiring, allowing for a restructuring of her role into a new configuration of staff and contractors, allowing for us to take advantage of new opportunities and remain flexible over the long term.

As with last year, this budget is not balanced, in that expenses are higher than expected revenues. We are on track to end 2020 with about $22,000 in revenue. If we are to make any significant gains as a party, we must invest that money wisely rather than simply put it in our operating reserves. Current fundraising is bringing in about $18K per month, a 38% increase over 2019. This is due to new staff capacity in fundraising as well as the fact that this was a PNC year. The only part of our fundraising operation that is languishing are monthly sustainers and major donors, both areas that our Communications Manager plans to devote more attention to in the coming year. We are confident that this year, we might finally hit our fundraising targets and are comfortable recommending an overall revenue target of $279K. This figure includes regular fundraising income as well as revenue from the ANM and from merchandise sales.

Therefore:
  The Steering Committee, in consultation with the Finance Committee, presents the 2021 budget for adoption.
