Background

After modest but successive growth in 2019 and 2020, followed by a post-presidential year cyclical decline in 2021, the proposed 2022 budget attempts to strike a balance between a forward-looking plan for growth and a more realistic assessment of our current fundraising capacity. The total budget proposed for 2022 is $288,000, roughly 6% lower than the 2021 budget proposal.

As with last year, this budget is not balanced, in that expenses are higher than expected revenues. While expenses exceeded revenues in 2021, we did end 2020 with significant excess revenue. If we are to achieve our goals as a party, we must invest that money wisely to position ourselves for growth, rather than simply manage decline. That said, we must be realistic about current fundraising capacity. At this time last year, we averaged about $18K per month in fundraising revenue. However, in 2021, this figure declined to just over $13K per month, a 28% drop.

Despite these challenges, this budget seeks to maintain almost all current line items, even if at a reduced amount. This includes newer additions to the budget such as a modest legal fund and state grants for outreach. Ballot access is the only line item getting an increase over 2021. The budget maintains current staffing levels at three full-time individuals -- a webmaster, communications manager, and virtual office manager. In order to make this possible, the major cut is to Steering Committee expenses -- both travel subsidies to an in-person Annual National Meeting as well as an SC retreat (virtual or otherwise).

Therefore:

The Steering Committee, in consultation with the Finance Committee, presents the 2022 budget for adoption.
