Background

Between Feb 12 and Feb 20 2023, the following Steering Committee members (who were elected in July 2021) resigned in emails to the National Committee - Garrett Wasserman,Christopher Stella and Rei Stone Grover.

On March 12, Ahmed Eltouny (also elected in July 2021) resigned. The Steering Committee then approved by consensus to amend 1134 to add Eltouny’s vacant seat to the proposal.

According to the GPUS Bylaws, a special election should be called by the Steering Committee in which at least 3 weeks for nominations, 2 weeks of discussion, and 1 week of voting are provided, to replace the vacated Steering Committee seats for the remainder of the term expiring Summer 2023.

However, due to the timelines, the newly elected Steering Committee members from a vacancy election would only be in office for approximately a month before nominations for the Summer 2023 Steering Election would begin.

Rather than making candidates run for Steering Committee, receive training and potentially hand things over, just to have to run for office again, the Steering Committee instead proposes that the four vacated terms be slightly extended to enable the three elected Steering Committee members to serve into the next term – that is, the elected Steering Committee from the vacancy election would serve as the Steering Committee until Summer 2025.

This proposal allows the National Committee to approve this one-time variance to the typical election rules and procedures.

Proposal

The National Committee hereby approves that we proceed with an early multi-seat election for the four vacated Steering Committee seats. Due to the urgency of filling the Steering Committee seats, the nomination period will be a three week period followed by three weeks of discussion period and two weeks of voting.

The winners of the SC multi-seat election to fill those vacancies for the remainder of the 2021-2023 term and shall carry an extended term from the end of the vacancy election until the next regularly scheduled staggered Steering Committee election in 2025.

Resources

The Steering Committee shall carry out the election to fill the Steering Committee vacancy according to typical rules and procedures, with the new term in effect.
