Background

At the GPUS Steering Committee meeting in Washington, D.C. on
September 18-19, the SC held discussions on many timely and important
subjects currently facing the Green Party of the United States. The
Steering committee is recommending the formation of 2 working groups
to address several of these challenges and help provide thoughtful
direction for the future of our party. What follows below, and in a
concurrent proposal, are the recommendations of the SC for action by
the GPUS Coordinating Committee.

One of these challenges is finding a way to utilize our experience
from the 2004 GPUS National Nominating Convention, the process leading
to it and our experience as a party since. We will have to go through
this process again in 2007 / 2008 and many feel beginning a process of
evaluation and future recommendations will help us craft the most
grassroots, democratic and inclusive process for future national
nomination and exploratory processes.

The GPUS Steering Committee feels the best way to benefit from the
experiences of 2003/2004 and begin planning for future national
nominating processes is a working group to review the 2004
presidential exploratory process, national nominating process and
nominating convention and compile the lessons and recommendations the
National Committee, and other GPUS committees, can use to prepare for
2007/2008.

Proposal

The Green Party of the United States shall form a working group to
review the 2004 presidential exploratory process, national nominating
process and nominating convention and compile the lessons and
recommendations the National Committee, and other GPUS committees, can
use to prepare for 2007/2008.

The working group shall consist of:
• 1 member appointed by each of 5 national committees: AC /
Credentials / BRPP / PCSC / ANMC. The nominees do not have to be
members currently serving on the committee, but should have been
active during period beginning 1/1/04 and ending 6/30/04.
• Up to one person appointed by each state party, network and caucus
Nominations will be due to the Steering Committee from states,
caucuses, networks and committees no later than January 31, 2005. The
Steering Committee shall record and announce the working group members
no later than February 7, 2005. This resolution requests the working
group provide the SC a preliminary report by April 15, 2005 and
provide the National Committee a final report and list of
recommendations no later than June 1, 2005.
