Background

The 2005 GPUS budget is being presented as a minimum operating budget also known as “A survival budget“ funding the current GPUS structure with regards to the DC office staff - our present two full time staff people – an office operations director and a combined fundraising and political director – as well as five part time independent contractors- the accountant, media coordinator, webmaster, direct mail consultant and communications consultant.

As the national committee already knows, the GPUS Steering Committee has been dealing with the financial shortfalls over the past few months, which basically amounts to fundraising not matching the current monthly expenditures. Presently if the current financial revenues are not matched by the expenditures in the very near future the GPUS Steering Committee will be forced to decide on a number of major cutbacks up to and including closing the DC office and the laying off some if not all of our full time and part time consultant staff. This is reality!

GPUS can and will continue to be a political party but it will need to function quite differently from the current operation. This budget is not intended to envision what it may be at that time. Whatever that type of operation may be in the future will need to be decided by the GPUS National Committee. If the GPUS Steering Committee can prevent any drastic action through the first part of 2005, this decision can wait until our mid year annual meeting in 2005; otherwise the GPUS Steering Committee will be submitting proposals to National Committee in the very near future for actions that cannot wait for that annual meeting as well as take actions on its own and within its powers to rectify the situation(s).

If EVERYONE in GPUS helped and did their share of fundraising we will be able to continue the current GPUS operations as is proposed in this 2005 minimum operating budget. Can we count on your help with resolving our financial shortfalls?
