Background

II. Social Justice, A. Civil Rights and Equal Rights, 1. Women’s Rights, new paragraph
The current language of the plank that is being addressed is below

This Amendment is a new paragraph to be inserted before the current heading “Violence and Oppression”:

"We support decriminalizing sex for pay by consenting adults so that the people who have sex for pay can make full use of legal, health and labor protections for protection against abuse and exploitation. We support the right of people who have sex for pay to receive public services, including medical treatment, child care and housing, and access to education, unemployment benefits and social security. We support criminal laws to prevent forced sex for pay, human trafficking, abuse and violence. We acknowledge that discrimination, marginalization and other structural inequities affect people’s decision to engage in sex for pay and we support government benefits, job training and educational programs for those who want to leave the industry. Policies of decriminalizing both the seller and purchaser of sex have shown the potential to reduce harm to workers but the data is not conclusive regarding whether they increase trafficking. The Green Party will support the policy that shows the greatest efficacy in reducing trafficking while increasing worker safety and ensuring fairness and equity for women in all economic levels around the world."

This Amendment willl replace the following paragraph on Swedish law which is the fourth paragraph after the current heading “Violence and Oppression:

CURRENT LANGUAGE
The Green Party calls for new U.S. legislation relating to prostitution modeled on the Swedish law passed in 1999, now adopted by other countries and being considered by more, that has drastically reduced human trafficking and prostitution in Sweden. That law criminalizes the purchase of services from prostitutes, pimps and brothel keepers instead of criminalizing the prostitutes. The Green Party urges the U.S. to open dialogs and visit with Sweden as a step toward introducing legislation in the U.S. Congress to address the exploitation, violence and harm to women through prostitution.
