Background

We all thought we'd already saved the whales, so much so it's become the joking environmentalist stereotype. The Bush administration is about to break the 19-year moratorium on commercial whale hunting, negotiating with historic whale-hunting nations on an agreement that may be signed this June in South Korea.

A coalition of over 75 environmentalist and animal rights groups called "America's Whale Alliance" hopes to attend that June meeting and oppose the Bush Administration's betrayal. AWA does not take a position on aboriginal whaling. AWA is seeking GPUS support for opposing a return to legal commercial whaling.

Proposal

That the GPUS endorse the efforts of America's Whale Alliance opposing the Bush Administration's negotiations to allow international resumption of commercial whaling.

Resources

An expedited vote is requested, so that America's Whale Alliance can prepare literature and other materials indicating GPUS support in advance of the meeting in June in South Korea. Our endorsement would become effective upon completion of the vote.

Our GPUS platform already includes, under Ecological Sustainability > Ocean Protection, "Maintain the ban on international whale trade, which was debated at the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species."

This proposal affirms that platform position. A strong and specific Green Party endorsement of AWA's efforts is particularly important, as whale hunting is an international issue and we are the only political party of international scope.

If adopted, this proposal would additionally authorize the GPUS International Committee to notify Green Parties around the globe of our interest in, and position on, the Bush administration's stunning reversal on commercial whale-hunting.
