Background

The New York State Green Party, NY Greenfest and Allegany County Green Party, would like to support and host the 2011 Annual National Meeting of the Green Party at Alfred University in Alfred, NY August 4-7, 2011. Over the past several months, the Annual National Meeting (ANM) committee has been working with the organizer of GreenFest and the NYS Green Party to produce a formal proposal. GreenFest is an event held in Western NY every other year. It features outstanding workshops on politics, environment, social action, and grassroots democracy.

The ANM would be held in conjunction with GreenFest. Many workshops are already planned and the venue has been secured for GreenFest. We will present some workshops and hold the National Committee meeting simultaneously with GreenFest. There will be many opportunities for non-delegates to participate in a variety of workshops while the delegate meeting is in session.

GreenFest draws approximately 300 Green Party members, environmental activists and community members. By working with this already-established event, we will be able to focus on planning a few workshops and the GNC meeting. GreenFest is an event run by Greens for Greens. Of particular concern is gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale; GPNYS and GreenFest plan to work with the ANM to showcase Green solutions to this important issue.

Note: When you read the budget, you will see two columns -- one for Green Fest and one for the Annual Meeting. The Green Fest is a fairly grassroots event organized by local Greens and they asked that we handle the registration for them and thus the finances. To some extent this will be two separate but simultaneous events; however, there will also be overlap in the evenings and for special events. Think of this as a Green Festival with lots of workshops, speakers, and performances, while there is also a delegate meeting happening during the day time. This will be an excellent opportunity for folks to bring other Greens from their locals and state who are not delegates. It will also be great for delegates -- lots of enhanced opportunities for interaction with other Greens in the evening hours. While these events are integrated, we separated the budget to show that the ANM will not be subsidizing the Green Fest nor will Green Fest be subsidizing the ANM.
