Why I’d like to be a Delegate to the Global Green Congress in Senegal.

In describing my background and experience on the IC (below), I've tried to emphasize that much of the work and mission of the IC is to make contact and form relationships with members of international Green parties. This is largely by email, though also in person, all of which takes time, respect for the different cultures these Green Parties represent, even while we share Green values. As an IC co-chair with a year left in my term, I would value the opportunity to represent GPUS in that effort in Senegal.

More specifically, I think GPUS delegates to this Congress have several roles/positions to represent in Senegal:

First, to support GPUS platform in any votes at the GG Congress.

Second, to listen and learn as much as possible about the concerns and functioning of other Green Parties, particularly those in Africa and Asia; to seek allies on various issues of mutual concern through informal conversations as well as in formal sessions/workshops; and to report this information back to GPUS;

Finally, there’s little doubt that our government continues the ultimately self-defeating pursuit of world dominance by its promotion of the arms industry and militarization of international relations. It thereby creates unnecessary conflict and fosters violence in the world, all at the expense of the natural environment, human security and civil liberties. Mindful of these imperial policies, I believe that delegates of GPUS --the main opposition party in the US--have a responsibility at such international Green gatherings to a) keep making the connection to our Green colleagues between such US militarism and its effect particularly on climate change and the destruction of the earth; and b) to be faithful in opposing the reproduction of such dominance or neocolonialism among Green Parties themselves, especially by those from the most developed countries vis-à-vis those from the developing world.

My Background

My interest in the GPUS International Committee developed via my experience as an academic anthropologist of the Middle East (Lebanon, Iran). Research interests led me to retrain in clinical psychology, which I practice in New Milford. I continue to write on culture/ human development in the Middle East.

Since the mid-1990's, I've traveled regularly to Occupied Palestine, where I volunteered at the Gaza Community Mental health Clinic, conducted respite workshops for Palestinian humanitarian workers, and with an Israeli colleague, did training on the subject of human attachment under conditions of political violence for teachers and social workers in East Jerusalem.

I've been a GPCT representative to the IC since 2000. I became IC co-chair in 2006 when I filled in for resigning co-chair Alan Kaufman, after which I was elected and am in my third term.

As a member of the IC, I've been a point-person on the Israeli-Palestinian (I/P) conflict, helping to draft our current platform planks on Middle East policy. I’ve represented the party at various peace conferences/demos in CT and NY, and in 2004 and 2010, in Haifa, Israel at Conferences on the Right of Return and One Democratic State Conference, respectively. In 2009 I moderated a GP panel on Gaza and the I/P conflict in NYC, and this year organized and participated in a GP panel on One Democratic State at the Left Forum in NYC. Also, I’ve worked to foster GPUS relations with nascent (2) Israeli, and Palestine Green parties, meeting with both groups in the past.

Within the party, I've presented workshops on the conflict at GPUS annual meetings (on the Palestinian right of return; with Ruth Weill, on the GPUS Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions resolution, Prop 190ed a workshop at the 2004 GPUS convention on the occupations of Iraq and Palestine that included international Green guests, among them a representative from one of the (now defunct) Israeli Green parties.

My participation at international Green gatherings includes the 2007 European Green Party Council meetings in Vienna, where I attended their Foreign Affairs Working Group; a joint US-Canadian Green Party Teach-in on the North American Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) in Ottawa, 2007 (Canadian and US Green Parties blast secretive NAFTA-Plus trade-security deal); I was an observer at the 2008 Global Green meeting in Sao Paulo, and the 2008 Federation of the Green Parties of the Americas meeting in Quebec City; and most recently (June) met with members the International Committee of the Green Party of England and Wales.

For the past couple of years, I have been circulating the GPUS draft statement among international Greens urging them to endorse the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel. Most recently, I’ve made contact with GP Australian Senator Lee Rhiannon of NSW whose party has endorsed also BDS (despite opposition from Australian GP leader, Senator Bob Brown.) The Congress would be an opportunity to make contact with her/NSW Greens.
