Background

This year, President Obama will decide whether to build the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, which will carry 800,000 barrels a day of the dirtiest oil on earth for export.

On Feb. 17 (Presidents Day Weekend), 350.org and the Sierra Club have initiated a demonstration at the White House. Their goal is "for thousands to form a massive human pipeline, and to tell the President that we expect leadership on climate change, beginning with a rejection of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline."

Tar Sands Blockade is a coalition of Texas andOklahoma landowners and climate justice organizers using peaceful and sustained civil disobedience to stop the construction of TransCanada’s Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. Jill Stein, the Green Party Presidential candidate, was arrested in November 2012 for providing support to the Blockade.

Both the Canadian and United States Green Parties are on record opposing the pipeline. The proposed multi-billion dollar 1,700 mile Keystone XL pipeline would connect the tar sands oil fields in Alberta, Canada, to refineries in the United States.The pipeline would pose a threat to the Ogallala Aquifer, water source for many millions in the US.The tar sands deposits are the second biggest pool of extractable carbon on the Earth. Climate scientist James Hansen has said that if the tar sands get extracted it's essentially "game over" for the climate. Indigenous populations: Northern Alberta, the region where tar sands oil is extracted, is home to many indigenous populations. Important parts of their cultural traditions and livelihood are coming under attack because of tar sands operations.

Proposal

As part of an ongoing effort to reduce climate change, GPUS will help mobilize Green Party members and the general public to oppose the Keystone XL pipeline. This would include mobilizing Green Party members to support the blockade efforts against Keystone XL as well attending the Feb. 17th protest at the White House calling upon President Obama to finally reject the pipeline.

The GPUS hereby endorses the Feb. 17 Keystone XL protest at the White House.

The GPUS will articulate its own position as to stopping the Keystone XL pipeline.

Green Party members throughout the country are encouraged to be part of the organizing efforts against the Keystone Pipeline and turn out in force to provide a strong Green presence at the Feb. 17 events.

The GPUS Media Committee will monitor Green activity involved with this event and create and disseminate media releases and other creative media activity as appropriate.

The resolution also urges the International Committee action to engage the parties in Canada on this issue.

All Greens are urged to participate in the Feb. 17 Keystone XL protest in Washington, to provide a visible Green presence.

Greens across the country who can not travel to DC are urged to support and initiate local efforts to oppose the Keystone Pipeline.
