Background

GPUS National Committee (NC) confirmation of GPUS delegate to the Federation of Green Parties of the Americas (FPVA), elected by the International Committee (IC), March 8, 2013: Jack Ailey (IL).

Fellow IC members,

Thank you to Justine for nominating me for FPVA delegate. We have a number of qualified
persons nominated for this position. I do also believe that I am qualified.

Here are some relevant points from my political history.

I have been active with the Illinois Green Party since the Nader election of 2000. I helped to
found a local of the ILGP focused on the predominately Mexican neighborhood on the
southwest side of Chicago. Over the years I have taken on various responsibilities with the

ILGP and the GPUS. I am currently treasurer of the ILGP. I am also on the Platform
Committee of the GPUS. Shortly after I joined the Platform Committee, I got persuaded to
become a co-chair when the previous co-chair went politically missing a few months before
the 2008 convention. My term as co-chair was very traumatic and unsuccessful, but I got a
good education about how we need to work to get things done in the GPUS. I am glad to say
that in both 2010 and 2012 platform cycles, the immigration policies of the GPUS were
advanced and protected. I am still a rank and file member of the platcom.

I decided I wanted to the Global Greens Congress in Brazil and went. It was there that I met a
number of you. At that time I was not even on the IC listserve. I have felt that Global Warming
is the central threat that mankind needs to deal with immediately. I feel that the Global Green
movement is the best hope to get a serious world wide program to mitigate climate change as
well as to fix the other pressing social, economic and political problems of the world's
peoples. Clearly our movement is not as strong, united, or organized as it needs to be.
Nevertheless I feel we have to keep pushing. I also went to the Global Greens Congress in
Dakar. I put daily notes about that Congress on a the website for our local website
.

I have some idea of the difficulties the GPUS faces with the leadership of the FPVA. I have no
magic solution to this, but I believe we must persist in presenting our political and organization
proposals to the FPVA. This requires a lot of diplomacy. I don't claim to be an expert in this.
What I can say is that I try hard to remain friends with people even if we disagree. I try hard
not to burn bridges. Overall I think this strategy has worked well. The other side of this
situation is that we have to be firm in the key point or points that we want to stand on. All three
of the delegates are going to have to be clear and strong in this regard.

One advantage I might have in this relationship is that I do fairly well in Spanish. I learned
Spanish earlier in my political career. I understand political speeches in Spanish pretty well
and I can translate flyers into Spanish. I am not a native speaker and I can miss things when
people are talking back and forth rapidly. Obviously we would want the FPVA to carry out its
work in all the native languages of the continent. However, given the current situation, I don't
have much hope that this will happen any time soon.

I am semi-retired and do have time to travel to FPVA meetings which I will certainly do if
elected as a delegate. Even if I am not elected, I would be interested in going if a way could
be found to get me into the meetings to assist our delegates in understanding what is
happening.

Thank you for considering me.

Solidarity,
Jack Ailey, IL
