Background

The Green Party of Minnesota and the Green Party of St. Paul (and 4th CD) are excited to serve as hosts of the GPUS Annual National Meeting in July 2014. The locals and the state party strongly support this proposal. Meetings and housing will be at Macalester College (www.macalester.edu) July 24-27, 2013. There will be low-cost campus meals available and there are a variety of restaurants within walking distance of the college. Hotels, hostels, camping and homestay options are being explored and further information will be forthcoming. Local and state party members have said they are interested in helping out in the ways host parties usually help out - acting as hosts, guides, registration, logistics, errands, drivers if needed. There are good public transportation and airline options. Additionally, St. Paul is within a day’s drive of many Greens in Minnesota and other states.

2014 will be the 30th anniversary of the first national get-together of Greens. That meeting was held in St. Paul at Macalester College. The first national Green organization was founded then, the decentralized Green Committees of Correspondence, which had the goal of organizing local groups and to work towards a Green political organization. The 10 key values were put forth during that meeting. In 1984, the spirit was very much grounded in grassroots democracy. Today, in Minnesota the grassroots spirit is very strong and could potentially be one focus of the meeting. Coalitions between different movement-based organizations are also getting more prominent. We are also excited about planning special workshops and events around the anniversary.
