Background

This proposal would clarify that one must accept a nomination to the GPUS Steering Committee by the end of the nomination period in order to become an official candidate. This proposal is coming forward at this time, because despite four straight years where the GPUS Secretary sent out the election announcement for Steering Committee stating "Those nominated by others must accept the nomination by the close of the nomination period,“ a candidate was placed on the ballot in 2015 who did not accept the nomination by the end of the nomination period.

Existing GPUS Bylaws already specify that nominations and acceptances need to be posted to the Votes List. This proposal would remove any ambiguity and make it clear by what day.

Proposal

Part I - That GPUS Bylaws 6-1.2 be amended to add " All candidates must accept nominations by the end of the nomination period” , such that 6-1.2 shall read:

6-1.2 Nominations may be made by any National Committee member or alternate, including the candidate. Nominations shall be considered made when posted to the National Committees Votes List. Nominations shall be considered accepted when posted as such to the National Committees Votes List by the candidate. Self-nominations shall be considered accepted when made. All candidates must accept nominations by the end of the nomination period.

Part II: That the official announcement for Steering Committee elections sent to the National Committee by the GPUS Secretary shall directly quote the language in 6-1.2 describing the nomination process.
