Background

The Platform presently calls for a moratorium on fracking until it can be sturdied further. By now we know the dangers of fracking to water quality, the dangers of methane leaks that worsen global warming, the dangers of earthquakes caused by fracking. We urge that platform be changed to call for a ban on fracking.

Proposal

To amend the final item of Chapter III. B. 3.

Current language of plank that is being addressed:
Enact a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing (ÒfrackingÓ) until its damaging effects on water and air quality are fully studied and understood. Permanently ban high-volume hydraulic fracturing in sensitive watersheds. Regulate hydraulic fracturing under the Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Water Act and National Environmental Policy Act, and require public disclosure of the chemicals used in fracturing fluids.

Proposed amendment of the current language:
The Green Party stands for the enactment of bans on hydraulic fracturing for natural gas and oil on the local, state and federal level and stands for bans on the disposal of wastes created by the fracking industry.

Resources

Approval of this proposal will amend the 2016 Draft Platform, which will be approved by the GPUS 2016 Presidential Nominating Convention and published on the GPUS website in or before September, 2016.
