Background

This amendment would clarify the existing plank on renewable energy by adding a time frame for complete transition to renewable energy.

Detailed proposals have been drawn up for switching to 100% renewable energy for New York, California and Washington states. Last year a new plan was published to convert all 50 states by 2050.1

Our platform should set this goal for the complete conversion to renewable energy.

Proposal

To amend Chapter II. Ecological Sustainability
1. Climate Change
5. Clean. Green Energy Jobs

Current language of plank that is being addressed:
b. Adopt a clean energy portfolio standard that rapidly replaces our combustion-based power sources with wind, solar, ocean, small-scale hydro, and geothermal power.

Proposed amendment of the current language:
b. Transition to 100 percent renewable energy by 2050, with at least 80 percent achieved by 2030, using wind, solar, ocean, small-scale hydro, and geothermal power. Renewable energy is technically and economically feasible. The barriers to a renewable energy economy come from economic, political and social interests, and are not technical.

Resources

Approval of this proposal will amend the 2016 Draft Platform, which will be approved by the GPUS 2016 Presidential Nominating Convention and published on the GPUS website in or before September, 2016.
