Background

This language expands the current policy to include all independent, non-profit broadcasters, not just PBS and ÒNPR,Ó (now NPR, PRI and APM). This is important, because both PBS and NPR have become overly dependent on large corporate funding, which has had a negative effect on their ability to adequately cover some topics. More government funding would decrease their need to rely on corporate funds; in the meantime, need has developed for more sources of independent non-commercial broadcast media. This language would update the policy to support a wider array of broadcasters to increase media diversity and ability to cover important issues.

Proposal

To amend Chapter I, Democracy, Part C. Free Speech and Media Reform, Section 11 to read:
11. Provide public funding for independent nonprofit broadcastersÊto ensure high-quality news and cultural programming with the widest possible range of viewpoints.

Current Language:
11. Provide generous public funding for Public Broadcasting System (PBS) television and National Public Radio (NPR) to ensure high-quality news and cultural programming with the widest possible range of viewpoints.

Resources

Approval of this proposal will amend the 2016 Draft Platform, to be presented for approval at the 2016 Presidential Nominating Convention.
