Background

This proposal would amend the Public Education plank. In GPCA it was recently updated in response to requests by several Greens serving on school boards across the state and with their input, to bring the Public Education plank up to date.

Proposal

To amend Chapter II, Social Justice, Section E., Education and the Arts as follows:

REVISE paragraph 5:
Greens believe in education, not indoctrination. DELETE: We do not think that schools should turn our children into servile students, employees, consumers or citizens. We believe it is very important to teach our children how to ask good questions.

WITH:
Greens believe in education, not indoctrination. We must not rely on standardized tests to reflect educational achievement because of their biases that reduce education quality to the lowest common denominator. Instead we support the use of tools such as the "learning record" that rely on the authentic assessment of a student's actual work in terms of that student's gifts and abilities.. We believe it is very important to teach our children how to ask good questions.

DELETE THE 1st part of PARAGRAPH 7

DELETE We also call attention to the results of a quarter century of corporate funding from the likes of the Bradley and Wal-Mart Family Foundations and a decade of No Child Left Behind, a vast, well-endowed and lucrative sector which seeks to dismantle, privatize, or militarize public education and destroy teachers unions.

KEEP Regimes of high-stakes standardized testing and the wholesale diversion of resources away from public schools are provoking crises for which the bipartisan corporate consensus recommends school closings, dissolution of entire school districts and replacement by unaccountable, profit-based charter schools. The Green Party is unalterably opposed to the dissolution of public schools and the privatization of education.

ADD to GPUS EDUCATION in section 1 (between a. and w., or after w.):
¥ Decrease the student-teacher ratio in classrooms and increase the number of counselors, nurses, librarians and social workers
¥ Make all public education sites gun-free to provide a safe learning environment
¥ Include self-defense skills in the physical education curriculum at elementary school level
¥ Provide a curriculum on non-violent interactions at the junior high school level
¥ Advocate for the inclusion of curricula on ethnic studies at the high and elementary school levels, and also as a graduation requirement for high schools
¥ Provide training in negotiation, mediation, non-violence skills at the senior high schools level
¥ Provide researched-based drug, tobacco, and alcohol prevention
¥ Include curricula focusing on civil rights history, actions, and advances, and how current law can be used to achieve personal civil rights
¥ Provide age-appropriate education on sex, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, and safer sex.

DELETE v. {This bullet point belongs in a military plank.}
No person should be permitted to sign away eight years of their life to the armed forces, without full written disclosure of what is expected of them and what they can expect in return from the government. We demand that the practice of deceiving prospective service recruits about the truth of their service contract be recognized as a fraudulent practice and sufficient grounds for re-voking an enlistment contract. Current practices holding individuals legally to all the terms of their military service contract should also apply to the government.
