Proposal

To amend Chapter I, Democracy, Part D, Foreign Policy, Section 2, A Real Road to Peace in the Middle East Ð Iran to read:

Iran
The Green Party supports the Òjoint comprehensive plan of actionÓ signed in July, 2015 by Iran and the P5+1 (five permanent members of the UN Security Council: China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, United StatesÑplus Germany), and the European Union, which confirms IranÕs status as a zone free of nuclear weapons.Ê According to the United States National Intelligence Estimate, Iran halted an alleged active nuclear weapons program in the Fall of 2003.Ê Iran, which has signed the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, has consistently called for a nuclear-free zone in the entire Middle East.
The Òjoint comprehensive plan of actionÓ provides that in return for Iran upholding its agreements to rid itself of nuclear material as verified by inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), current economic sanctions by the US, European Union and UN Security Council will be lifted.Ê The Green Party supports the swift elimination of these economic sanctions on Iran and looks to the normalization of relations between Iran and the United States.Ê In keeping with UN resolutions call for a nuclear-free Middle East, the Green Party also calls on Israel, the only nuclear power in the Middle East with at least 200 nuclear warheads, to dismantle its nuclear weapons program and sign on to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.

CURRENT PLATFORM PLANK ON IRAN
Iran
We support negotiation with Iran for a peaceful resolution that reduces or eliminates sanctions, while continuing or strengthening inspections to ensure IranÕs adherence toÊthe Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. We oppose any bill threatening increased sanctions as long as Iranian policy is to pursue dialogue on this topic. We call on the President and Congress to oppose any attack by Israeli military or intelligence services on IranÕs nuclear research facilities, and for American military and intelligence services to refrain from such attacks as well.
