Background

After massive cuts and staff layoffs during 2018, the proposed 2019 budget plans for a slow rebuilding. The total budget proposed for 2019 is roughly equivalent to 2018; yet due to staff reductions in the early part of 201, resources have been re-allocated from the staff line to caucuses and committees. That said, there is still an increase in the staff line with a goal of hiring one additional FTE. (For reference, we had 4.5 FTE in 2017 and are currently operating with 1.5 FTE.) Although still not where we would like to be overall, this is a much more realistic and optimistic budget than last year.

As with the 2017 budget, this budget aims to be balanced, in that expenses are equivalent to expected revenues. Current fundraising is bringing in about $20K per month which equates to $240K per year. However, fundraising must pick up if we are to make any progress as a party. Thus, we are recommending a budget that reflects a slight increase in fundraising revenue of $250K. The remaining revenue, $25K, comes from the Annual National Meeting and merchandise sales, which is fairly typical.

The GPUS Steering Committee is committed to turning this financial ship around and is committed to investing the time and talent needed to increase revenues. Last year, we invested savings from the staff line item into a fundraising consultant. The consultant has made several recommendations, some of which can be easily implemented.

Therefore:

The Steering Committee, in consultation with the Finance Committee, presents the 2019 budget for adoption.
