Background

Our Platform currently calls for various and inconsistent amounts of greenhouse gas reductions by 2020, 2030 and 2050.  Also, since we will soon be publishing a 2020 Platform, it no longer makes sense to speak of 2020 as a future goal. Thus, to update this, and to avoid conflicting and confusing numbers, the Platform Committee urges that the following proposal be approved.

Change the following numbers in the Platform as specified below in order to update the Platform and assure consistency.
Chapter III: Ecological Sustainability
A.  Climate Change

Our Position

[Current Text] Greens want to stop runaway climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions at least 40% by 2020 and 95% by 2050, over 1900 levels.

[Proposed Text]  We call for legally binding commitments for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030 and a 95% reduction by 2050 over 1990 levels.
