Background

2016 was a year of unprecedented growth for the Green Party of the United States. The Jill Stein for President campaign brought the Green Party imperative into the public eye as never before. As the Democratic Party sabotaged its progressive and working class base, and both corporate parties fielded arguably the two most despised candidates of all time, Greens grew their ballot lines to a new high of 45 and Stein garnered the most votes for a woman presidential candidate in U.S. history. We have experienced a groundswell in new membership, in donations and volunteers. We go into 2017 with the resources to undertake the hard work of organizing and outreach that will be necessary to transform this unique moment of opportunity into a solid and reliable base.

Toward that end, the Steering Committee has prioritized hiring organizers to support state party growth, help maintain and restore ballot lines and engage with frontline communities’ struggles for justice. As we invest in and expand our media and fundraising efforts we will be able to support additional staff positions in operations, volunteer coordination and field organizing. We are entering the year with bills paid, a solid operating reserve fund and the ability to empower our standing committees to undertake creative initiatives for party growth. It is essential that we put our new resources to work now to build the foundation we need to support our future campaigns and candidates, and the revolution of values that our country so sorely needs.

Therefore:

The Steering Committee, in consultation with the Finance Committee, the Fundraising Committee, the GPUS Fundraising Director, and other Committees and Caucuses, present the 2017 budget for adoption. This summary document is usually accompanied by supporting expense and fundraising narratives giving comparisons, analysis and projections, as called for by GPUS fiscal policy. Due to the coincidence of a critical turnover in the Fundraising Committee and the Treasurer position in 2016, those reports are not formally available for posting along with the summary spreadsheet. The Steering Committee apologizes for this omission and for the late submission of the budget for approval. During the three-week discussion period, the Steering Committee, Fincom and Fundcom will be happy to answer any questions and supply facts and figures as necessary to support this proposal.

Proposal

The National Committee of the Green Party of the United States hereby adopts the proposed 2017 budget (see references).

Resources

Increased participation of members in key standing committees, a commitment to sustainership, and coordination of state party leaders with GPUS organizing and fundraising plans.
